2016 Young Leadership Circle Award Announced

The CUA is pleased to announce that the it has chosen Dr. Jonathan Berger for the 2016 CUA Young Leadership Circle Award.

Dr. Berger is a senior resident in the Department of Urology, Naval Medical Center San Diego who is  interested in becoming engaged in advocacy and in pursuing leadership roles within the urology community.

Prior to residency, Dr. Berger was a flight surgeon for the United States Navy and had the opportunity to serve for a year as a member of the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff (ECOMS) for Naval Health Clinic Patuxent River, where he oversaw 4 Naval medical clinics across the state of Maryland. He has continued his leadership involvement by participating in a number of hospital-wide committees focused on patient safety and healthcare quality improvement. In addition, he was selected to represent the department on the Resident House Staff Council. He also started a project evaluating the effects of the USPSTF recommendations for prostate cancer screening on the use of PSA testing and eventual diagnosis of prostate cancer in their military and retiree population.

“Physicians maintain a special position in society, and I see it as our responsibility and duty to both advocate for our patient’s health as well as speak to the challenges we have in delivering that care. Health policy and advocacy are important means that a physician can use to reach policy makers well past his examination room.”
